Iron and Steel
RSS Dixie has a long history in the iron and steel markets from large integrated shops to the smaller mini mills. We provide numerous refractory options for most areas in today’s steel plant.
With the evolution of the mini mill, the electric arc furnace has become the most common steel melting unit in the modern day mill. Electric arc furnaces can reach temperatures in excess of 3000°F and require a refractory lining capable of withstanding aggressive slags and mechanical impact from scrap charges.
RSS Dixie provides numerous products for the electric arc furnace including our no cement, colloidal silica bonded, Dixie Crete CB 80 for deltas and runners in addition to our full line of Thermogen plastics.
Downstream from the electric arc furnace, the ladle is the primary molten steel transport unit. Our full line of Dixie Crete castables such as Dixie Crete LC 7001 and Dixie Crete LC 8501 can be used for working linings.
Another common unit in the steel mill is the tundish which acts as an intermediate vessel between the steel ladle and the continuous caster. The tundish is designed to provide a continuous flow of steel to the caster. RSS Dixie can provide numerous products for tundish safety linings such as Dixie Crete LC 7001 and Dixie Crete LC 65 C. We can also provide tundish maintenance products like our Thermogen 85 Ram, Thermogen 85 CTR Mortar, and Thermogen 70 Plastic.
Further downstream, the reheat furnace prepares the cast product for further processing. Typical reheat furnaces operate at a maximum temperature of 2500°F. RSS Dixie provides a wide range of products for every area in the reheat furnace like Dixie Crete LC 6001 and Thermogen 85 GR for the roof and sidewalls and Dixie Crete ULC 70 for the hearth.
